History

An Indian village stood at the junction of three major trade routes where Sheboygan stands today.  The Potawatomi called it “Shab-wa-wa-go-ning,” meaning rumbling waters, or waters disappearing underground.

Throughout the 1700s, English and French fur traders trapped and traded in the area. The first permanent settler, William Farnsworth,  arrived in 1818 and is credited with founding the City of Sheboygan.  When the community was platted in 1836, Farnsworth purchased half the land.

Separated from Brown County and given autonomous existence in 1838, the new County of Sheboygan featured the City of Sheboygan as its governmental seat.  At mid-century, Sheboygan experience rapid growth and became home port for large passenger and shipping vessels.

Later, when religious strife swept Europe, a large number of German immigrants came to Wisconsin.  Many settled in the Sheboygan area and their talents and energies contributed to progress and growth.
